The finalists in Huddersfield Technical College’s ‘Delicious Dessert’ competition, sponsored by the Consortium of Caterers and Administrators in Education, battled it out recently to discover who had created the most delicious dessert around.

13 year old winners Declan Ryan and Jonathon Wolferslon from Community Science College at Thornhill wowed the judges withtheir ‘Pandora’s Box’ culinary creation, a chocolate box with abiscuit base and cream filing topped with raspberries and strawberries.

The winning pair will get the opportunity to learn the tricks of the trade on the College’s very popular Junior Chefs course. They are invited for a meal at the College’s gourmet restaurant where their speciality dessert will be onsale. In addition, £40 worth of gift vouchers were given to the duo and their school will receive practical cookery books. The winning dish will also be served at Bradleys Restaurant, Fitz william Street.

The College received entries from high school pupils containing tasty recipes for truly delicious desserts. In teams of two, entrants created unique desserts using as many different ingredients as they liked.The best ten entries came to the College’s training kitchens where they had one hour to prepare and present their culinary creation to apanel of judges including Andrew Bradley, owner of Bradleys Restaurant, plus College chefs Pam Mollan and Gary Schofield. The competitors were scored on the dish chosen, taste, presentation,organisation, hygiene and safety.The judges commented:

“We were really impressed with all the finalists creations and it was very close run thing. The winning dessert was excellent. The taste and presentation as well as their kitchen skills were superb. To have worked aswell as they did without any previous training was amazing.”

Neville Cawley Catering Manager of Huddersfield Technical College presented the winners with £100 on behalf of the CCA. Neville commented "The CCA will sponsor other colleges and schools if they meet the criteria set out by the CCA."
